Hello, Japanese! Hello, WaniKani!

After a two-year break, I’m returning to the Japanese language.

For the past 2 years, I’ve been studying Azerbaijani and achieved some success. I’ve mastered the basic grammar, about 5,000 lexical units, speak reasonably well, and read with some difficulty.

Of course, I’d like to bring my Azerbaijani to the next level, but for now I’ve decided to put that “on the back burner.”

I will definitely return to Azerbaijani and learn to speak it fluently. I really like it. It’s a beautiful language—I’d even say it’s more beautiful than its brother, Turkish.

My current results in Azerbaijani: 4,719 cards learned in the Vocabilis online trainer.

My results in Japanese are more modest. I’ve learned 2,600 lexical units using Vocabilis and mastered basic grammar.

My plans for this year are to learn at least another 2,500 Japanese lexical units using the Vocabilis trainer, and also try to completely go through all levels of learning Japanese kanji characters using the WaniKani service.

I’ve already tried twice to master kanji using this service—the first time I completed 3 levels out of 60, the second time another 3 levels out of the same 60.

The task of conquering all 60 levels in a year is very ambitious, but that’s exactly why I like it.

What are your plans for this year?

Have you used the WaniKani service? If so, how’s your progress? Maybe you know alternatives?

And by the way, I’m not completely abandoning Azerbaijani. I continue reading the novel “Flowers for Algernon” (Elcernon üçün çiçəklər) in Azerbaijani. I’ve already read half of it.
